تأتي الرواية على شكل يوميات كُتبت في القرن التاسع عشر في القاهرة، وتعود لمصور فوتوغرافي ومحقق جنائي يدعى «سليمان أفندي السيوفي»، وصف من خلالها تفاصيل تحقيق كلف به للتقصي حول مصرع أحد الباشوات بطريقة شنيعة، ليكتشف أسرار غامضة ومحيرة.
