عصاب الجائحة :
علق القارب في عرض البحر؛ إذ غاصت المرساة في الأعماق في ثقب صخرة ضخمة. ماذا بإمكان شداد أن يفعل، وقد اختلط الظلام ولم يعد يرى كف يده أمامه؟! جلس على مؤخرة القارب وبجواره عدة الصيد التي لم تحصد شيئاً من خر البحر، وبدأت الريح تهز صدر القارب، فيرتفع وينزل مثل بعر يخب في وهاد صحراء موحشة، ويهتز جسد شداد وكأنه على قمة هودج.
